The Alt Empordà, located in the northeastern corner of Catalonia in the province of Girona, is a region where landscape, culture, and time come together to offer a different way of travelling. It’s a highly accessible destination thanks to the Figueres–Vilafant high-speed train station and its proximity to several airports, including Barcelona, Girona, Reus, and Perpignan, making it easy to reach from across Europe.

One of the most distinctive features of this region is the Tramuntana wind, a strong, dry northern wind typical of northeastern Catalonia. It forms when air descends from the Pyrenees and accelerates towards the plains and the coast, often leaving clear skies and exceptional visibility. In the Alt Empordà, this wind shapes the landscape and creates a bright, intense light throughout much of the year, giving the region a unique atmosphere that has long inspired artists and travellers.

Regarding the artists, Salvador Dalí found the roots of his surrealist universe here, which can be explored at the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres. Furthermore, the region is home to the Portlligat House-Museum and, together with the Gala Castle in Púbol, in the Baix Empordà region, forms the famous Dalí Triangle, one of the area’s most emblematic cultural attractions.

The region is best discovered without rushing, like cycling through vineyards, walking coastal paths, or wandering the streets of Cadaqués village, where light, sea, and the Tramuntana wind create an unforgettable atmosphere. Every experience invites visitors to slow down, observe, and connect more deeply with the landscape.
